Dan F. Maples Dan was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1947 into a family whose roots in golf course construction reach back into the 19th Century. The Maples family, since Dan's great-grandfather James, have been involved with golf either as professionals, superintendents, builders or architects. See the Maples Family Tree for details. At the age of six, Dan designed his first golf course and was handling earth moving equipment before he had his driver's license. During summer vacations Dan worked for his father gaining valuable experience in golf course construction and maintenance. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia in 1972, he worked as a club pro for two years. In 1974 Dan joined the firm of his father, Ellis, as a full partner. Together, the team of Ellis and Dan Maples helped create 17 superb courses including Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC, and the Country Club of North Carolina Dogwood Course in Pinehurst. Since forming Dan Maples Design, Inc. in 1984, Dan has gone on to become one of the most successful golf course designers in America. His impressive list of courses includes many of America's finest. Dan is a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. "When you are building a golf course, you have to please three different groups of people; pros, superintendents and owners. Having experience as all three gives me an edge because I know what each is looking for." Bradley Maples Bradley was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1982 and is currently following in the footsteps of his father Dan as a golf course/landscape architect. Bradley brings the Maples family experience along with tremendous creativity in design garnered from work on nearly a dozen golf courses and various projects of vastly different scales world wide. This Fourth generation golf course architect worked several years in golf course maintenance before graduating into golf course construction and design. While studying in the College of Design at NC State, Bradley honed his designing skills through multidisciplinary courses in Industrial Design, Art and Design, Landscape Architecture, and Architecture. Bradley led winning design teams from the College of Design to national and local student competitions. During his tenure at NC State, he gained unparalleled experience assisting the university in pioneering new College programs in such locations as Prague, Czech Republic at the NCSU Prague Institute and Ghana, East Africa. After graduating in 2006 Suma Cum Laud with a degree in Landscape Design, Bradley accepted a landscape architect position at Dan Maples Design, Inc. Together, Dan and Bradley have already written a course into the history books. Bradley is working with his father Dan on his first course renovation at Olde Mill in Hillsville VA. Olde Mill was also Dan's first course he worked on with his father Ellis. Ellis Maples Ellis was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1909. As a young teen-ager, Ellis worked for his father in his capacity as construction superintendent to Donald Ross at Pinehurst Country Club. After attending Lenoir Rhyne College Ellis worked in the Pinehurst Pro Shop and as assistant greenskeeper to his father at Mid Pines and Pine Needles Resorts in Pinehurst. Read what On the Green magazine said about Ellis and his career. After serving in the Armed Forces during WWII, Ellis supervised the construction of the last design done by Donald Ross, Raleigh Country Club. In 1953, he decided against a career as a professional golfer and opened up his own practice as a golf course architect. Before his death in 1984, Ellis and his design team had created over 70 golf courses in the Southeast, including Pinehurst #5. He was a lifetime member of the PGA. Frank Maples Frank was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1886. In close association with the famed Scottish designer Donald Ross, Frank served as Construction Superintendent during the construction of the first four courses at Pinehurst Country Club. Frank was a pioneer in his era as he invented golf course maintenance equipment that we still see used today. Read the Golf Course Management magazine article describing one of his inventions
